Production[]
The original 1989 Ranma ½ anime series was a massive hit and became one of the first anime to become successful overseas. Unfortunately, declining ratings caused the series to be cancelled after Season 7. At this time, only 22 out of the manga's 38 volumes had been adapted in animated format. A series of OVAs would later be produced in an attempt to continue the series, with the last one being released in 1996. A further OVA was released in 2008 for the Rumic World exhibition event. In either case, the original anime did not fully adapt the entiredy of the manga, nor was it ever given a proper ending.
Following the successful release of the 2022 Urusei Yatsura remake series, rumors began to circulate on the internet that a Ranma ½ anime reboot or continuation could be produced as well, though no definitive confirmation was released about the topic.
In April 2024, a series of X/Twitter posts alluded that a new Ranma ½ anime was in production, though no official statement was released at the time.
On June 25, 2024, a new Ranma ½ anime adaptation was officially announced. A new website was set up to promote the new series, untitled at the time, with further details to be revealed in a livestream post on July 17, 2024. On the date in question, a trailer for the series was released which revealed the series' name, the fact that it would be animated by Studio MAPPA, a premiere date of October 6, 2024, and the fact that several Japanese voice actors from the original anime would reprise their roles in the new series. The series airs on Nippon TV in Japan.
On July 26, 2024, it was announced that Viz Media, who owns the international distribution rights to the 1989 anime, had picked up the international rights to the series. Despite this, none of the original voice actors from the 1989 anime reprised their roles due to Netflix partnering with Iyuno to create the dub instead of having Viz Media.
In August 2024, the first 12 episodes were leaked online, alongside many Netflix original projects.
